What is the Coaching Toolkit?

The Coaching Toolkit provides you with practical and relatable communication strategies that are directly linked to the top 10 practices from Emma Doyle's research and book (co-author, Natalia Ashdown) entitled,

'What Makes a Great Coach?' (#WMAGC)

There are over 20 tools within The Coaching Toolkit, and they can be applied in various environments. Enjoy experimenting with the tools.

Background Information - The Coaching Tools

What's the purpose? Immediately add practical tools into your coaching toolkit and help your clients discover their inner coach. These coaching tools can be adapted to meet your specific needs. They are perfect for leaders wanting to learn strategies to coach and empower team members.

Where do the tools come from? They come from years of personal development courses, specifically since 2006, when I hung up my tennis racquets and stopped being a tennis coach. This is when I began learning about a whole new world of coaching, that is, developing my people skills. I moved from being an instructor to unlocking the learning that lives within the people I coach.

Each tool is directly linked to the chapters and practices found within the book, #WMAGC. The top 10 practices (and two additional chapters) have been derived from over 500 of the world's best coaches.

About the research: The responses came from our guiding question: "In 1 to a maximum of 3 words, what makes a great coach?" and was made up of the following data:

Practice 1: Decision-making - Coaching Tool Example

In this practice, we explore the power of strengthening both macro and micro decision-making skills — and the impact of those sliding-door moments in life. Below is an example of a simple micro decision-making tool you can use when you or your clients need quick clarity and confident action. Building a broader decision-making toolkit helps modern coaches empower their clients to trust themselves and perform under pressure.

Tool 2: Scenario Questions

This strategy invites you (or your client) to walk through three scenario-based questions that rapidly surface clarity. With regular practice, this becomes a fast, intuitive exercise. The key reminder: once you can handle the answer to Question 2, everything becomes possible – and taking that first step feels much easier.

Questions to ask:

1) What’s the best thing that could happen?

2) What’s the worst thing that could happen?

3) What’s the most likely outcome?

Call to Action

Challenge yourself to work through these three questions in under two minutes. Once you’ve explored the options, commit to action. This simple micro decision-making tool builds confidence, momentum, and trust in your own judgment.
